Want to Write Better Copy?

by admin on December 4, 2009

Copy, the words that sell. Improving copy is one of the most effective ways any business can dramatically increase it’s profits.

For small online businesses it’s important to know how to write your own copy. You probably don’t have a lot of money to spend paying a professional to write your material. Good copywriters can charge over $10,000 for one sales letter. It’s also important to understand the subject because later on as your business grows you may want to hire someone to do your copy.

You will be able to do a much better job of selecting that person and quickly figuring out if they know how to write good copy if you’ve done it yourself.

Emails, sales pages, squeeze pages- it’s all copy. If we can learn to improve our copy we will automatically make more money. There is always a better way to explain a subject, to present an offer or to tell a story. The key is learning how to expand your own potential. Maybe you already are a good writer, but don’t know how to adapt that skill to copywriting.

There are great copywriters out there, and there are some pretty bad ones. What is it that seperates them?

Much of it has to do with how you approach the learning process. A person who wants to become a better copywriter will do well to focus on gaining experience and exposing themselves to multiple kinds of copy. Book learning, or studying copywriting courses do have their place when you are learning but in this area nothing can be substituted for experience.

But maybe you don’t have enough experience to even take the first step and are considering going through a book learning course. That will work yes, but here is a better option.

Get yourself a copywriting software program such as “Sales Letter in a Box” or “Sales Letter Generator”. Google the names to find where they are for sale online. They are quite similar in use and function. These programs are somewhat plug and play- they take a lot of the work out of copywriting by doing the formatting for you. You can plug in text and it will assist you in outputting a decent looking sales letter. Using programs like these allow you to learn and get a feel for what good sales pages are supposed to look like and how they are made

Once you’ve gained a little experience at actually trying your hand at writing copy and using some of these partially automated programs then jump into the training course you had in mind.

You will find that everything makes more sense now. Terms and concepts addressed in the course will now make more sense because you have some hands on experience under your belt.

Tellman also highly recommends Jay Abraham’s Mr x-book. He considers it one of the top ebooks written on the subject of copywriting. It is somewhat expensive but if you can afford it, it’s worth it. I also recommend checking out http://www.copyblogger.com a blog written by copywriters. They have a vast amount of free valuable information over there.

Consider taking your personal copywriting training a step farther by joining us at http://www.listformula.com. Inside the Listbuilding Club we have video lessons dedicated exclusively to the topic of writing copy. In addition we have templatized emails and squeeze pages you can copy and adapt to your own uses. Here’s to your success!
