Testing, the deep dark secret of Internet Marketing.

by admin on November 18, 2009

Not only that folks, but all Internet Marketing testing has to be done in an underground bunker sealed off from the atmosphere.

Pretty heavy duty stuff eh? Seriously though if you aren’t testing (slap) yes that was for you, you’ve got to start right away! Not tomorrow Today! If you aren’t testing you are leaving a LOT of money on the table. That alone should get you going :) More money? Yes please. And if you are already testing? Good going! You probably know what I’m about to say.

What is testing and how does it relate to an online business? Testing is simply the process of changing elements on pages, emails and offers that your customer comes in direct contact with. You are essentially keeping track of what pages/emails/offers give better results.

This is much easier than it sounds. Take squeeze pages for example, even if you are brand new to the online world you should have a squeeze page up. On that squeeze page you will have a headline. To split test your squeeze page simply change the headline, start with color. Make two versions of your squeeze page and on one have the headline in black text and on the other have the headline in red text.

Then use a program like Adtrackz (www.adtrackz.com) to split test the pages.

That’s it! Now you will be able to review your conversion statistics and see which page generates more optins. You will be shocked, trust me. It’s not unheard of for a simple text color change to out perform by 50% or more. And the thing is you never know until you test. The same strategy can be applied to your offers, just change the price point or mention bonuses on one offer and not the other. You can also split test email subject lines.

Only test one element at a time. This means if you are split testing headline color, then just test that until you have a winner. If you determine that red converts better than black then make both your headlines red, and change what one of them says. If you test more than one element on a page you will not know which one it was that gave you better conversion. You’ll be chasing your tail around and around.

If you need help coming up with good headlines just Google “Jay Abraham 100 greatest headlines ever written” You’ll have over 100 to choose from. Don’t simply use them as-is, but adapt them to your niche.

To those more technically minded people who have an understanding of HTML you can use Website Optimizer to test multiple elements simultaneously on a page. This can save time and give you more powerful results, but we don’t recommend it unless you feel comfortable using HTML.

Testing is addictive. Once you get the hang of it you’ll be glued to your screen checking to see which pages did better. Don’t blame me if you find yourself staying up all night watching conversion stats! It happens to people all the time. For real.
