We have every level of reader, from experienced Internet marketing people, to very, very new people, who are just starting out. In a recent survey done by my company, we found that a majority of people want to be led step-by-step through the whole list building process. In response to that, we’re going to do a series of articles to give you the steps you need to take to get your list building system up and running.
The first thing you need to do is to decide what niche you’re going to work in. The worst possible one to be list building around would be Internet marketing at this point because you really know nothing about it yet. Plus, there is a whole ton of competition from people who are much more experienced. Of course, you might be able to come into the Internet marketing niche down the road, but for now, think of something that fascinates you. Think of something you love to do. Think of something you know a little about and want to learn more about. This could be a hobby, like golf. It could be your career, like real estate. It could be something you loved in school, like art. But whatever it is, be sure that it’s something you’ll want to work with for a long time.
Your next step is to go over to http://inventory.overture.com and to see how many searches have been performed on the terms that you chose. This tool will help you to see how many searches were performed in one month. If there were less than about 10,000 searches, it’s probably not a good niche to consider because nobody is searching for your term. If you find that’s true, try to think of another keyword in that niche that might be more heavily searched and if you can apply it to the niche you’ve chosen.
You also want to avoid using very broad terms, too. For instance, golf was searched 625,160 times in January 2007. That’s a lot of searching! Of course, it’s because “golf” is a very broad term. But if you scroll down, you’ll find keywords like “golf tip,” “golf game,” and “golf swing.” Build your niche around one of those terms, and you’ll have less competition. Be sure to write these alternate terms down and for your entire list, be sure to write the number of searches. This will help you to make your final choice of niches.
So, let’s say you chose “golf swing.” It has a respectable 12,582 searches, so people are definitely looking for help with their golf swings. They want to solve a problem they’re having with their golf swings. Right? So, you build a niche around teaching people to have better golf swings, and you’re list building and Internet marketing to that niche, as well. You can call up golf pros, who already have a list and a product, and you can do teleseminars or webinars with them and they’ll actually be helping you to be list building. You’ll get a bigger list and if you have an affiliate link to the product, you’ll both make money teaching people to have better golf swings. Right?
That’s the thing. Your niche has to be something that you know something about or want to know more about, that you love, and that people are looking for in order to succeed with Internet marketing and make money. When you have those three elements, you’re probably going to have a pretty good niche. The next step in Internet marketing and list building would be to brainstorm some domain names that fit your niche, but we’ll delve further into that in a future lesson.
