List Building and Autoresponder Codes

by admin on March 1, 2007

Once you have figured out your niche and built your squeeze page, you have to have some way to collect and house the names and email addresses that people give you. That’s what autoresponder services do. And, they also maintain your list.

By that, I mean that an autoresponder service allows you to upload messages to their server, usually as many as you like, and they send them to your list members in a sequential order that you can determine. Autoresponder services also allow you to send broadcast messages whenever you like to the people on your list.

So, if you want to build a list, a good autoresponder service is imperative.

Today, I’m going to show you how to insert the autoresponder code into your page. It’s easy, really, so don’t let it frighten you and hold you back. Your autoresponder service really should be doing most of the work for you.

First, you need to generate a form. (Different autoresponder services do this differently, so I can’t direct you on where to go.) Read the help files at your service, if you can’t find the form generator. Enter the data you want to see in your form, which may include:

  • A bit of text that will go above the opt-in boxes
  • Position of the Name and Email address boxes (Name should always go first)
  • Where you want your new list member directed after he or she has signed up for your list, called the “redirect” URL
  • What you want your submit button to read

Some tips for the form generation:

Above the opt-in box, you want a call to action. Make it say: “Get Your 10 Great Parenting Tips Today by Filling in Your Name and Email Address Here:,” or whatever. Tell people what you want them to do and why.

Make your submit button different, too. You may have to go into the HTML for the form to change it, but it’s worth the effort. Look for this string:

input type=”submit” name=”submit” value=”Submit”

Change the last “submit” part to say what you want it to read, like this:

input type=”submit” name=”submit” value=”Claim Your Subscription Now!”

It’s not terribly difficult, but it will make a difference in the number of opt-ins you get.

Once this information has been entered, your autoresponder will give you the HTML code that you need to make the right information and boxes appear on your page. Copy it completely.

Go to the HTML code for your page, where all the codes and commands are. Find the words or images just above where you want your autoresponder form to sit, and click in the next blank line. (After the last closing tag, which will have a / in it)

Paste the auto responder HTML code into your squeeze page code. When you go back to your WYSIWYG view, you should see your web form appear.

Below your opt-in boxes, also be sure to give folks a privacy statement, such as:

We respect your privacy and we won’t sell or distribute your e-mail address

You’ll have to add this yourself, after your opt-in boxes are in place.

Don’t let technical stuff stop you. If you have trouble doing this stuff, hire someone to do it for you, or call your autoresponder service and ask them to walk you through it. A good service will do that for you. When that’s all done, your squeeze page should be complete and you’re ready to start list building.

Good luck!
