List Building | Set the Pattern

by admin on February 27, 2007

When people come to your squeeze page, they give you something very valuable—their names and email addresses. Not all of them will buy from you, but when you’re collecting names and email addresses, it’s inevitable that some will buy from you. Did you ever stop to think that YOU are what will influence that outcome? You can have no sales, or you can have an incredible response rate!

So, what’s that?

What’s the single most influential thing?

Your welcome message.

It’s true. People like your list building page. They wonder what you have to give them, and in one way or another, they like you. If they didn’t they wouldn’t have given you their information. Right? I mean, when you don’t like a person, will you want to do business with them yourself? Of course not!

OK, so these people kind of like you. They don’t really know you.

That’s where your welcome message comes into play. Make it great! Seriously, tell them something about yourself. What you’re doing online and bring them into your life, if just a little. If you have kids, let them know that. If you’re into a completely different profession, like maybe you’re a Pediatrician or you train horses or whatever. People want to know you, and the more you let them know about you, the closer they will feel to you.

I’m not trying to tell you to completely spill, either. It would be ludicrous to give them your social security number, of course. But if you’re going to be afraid to give a little, like what part of the country you live in, you’re in the wrong business. People need to know that you’re a real person, have a life just like they do, and this bit of exchange helps them to trust you.

Don’t make this your really long life history, just give them a little, like a story, and welcome them to your list.

After that, you should carry on with business as usual. Your whole welcome message should be the same as any other message you send out to your list, really. Tell them a story, give them some information, and if you put links in every email, put links in it. Since you’re going to be selling something in every email, don’t neglect to sell them something in your welcome email, either.

You need to set a precedence so that when someone gets an email from you, they’ll expect a story first, your tips, then an offer. This establishes consistency, which is very important when you want people to do something, like clicking links. It also helps with trust.

Just don’t struggle with this first email so much that you never get started. Get it up, and once your list is building, you can go back and make it better. Just be sure to do that. Making your list members feel at home with you is very, very important.

Shazzzzzzzzammm…. List Building!
